Originally built in 1904, the 25.5m high water tower was initially used to supply the steam locomotives, which were subordinated in the neighboring Ringlokschuppen. It also secured the operation on the "Untere Ruhrtalbahn", a secondary line of the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn, which had already been put into operation in 1876. In 1991, the largest accessible camera obscura in the world was installed in the former water dome.
